Is the reality of the <strong>Jigokudani park<\/strong>, also known as <strong>Snow Monkey Park<\/strong>, in Japan, precisely in the Nagano prefecture.<br>\nTotally <strong>one of the experiences to not to miss in Japan<\/strong>, I recommend visiting the Snow Monkey Park overnight in the Yamanouchi area, in Yudanaka or Shibu Onsen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jigokudani is a mountainous area in the Japanese Alps, and in its forest, which is part of the Shigakogen Natural Park, there are many <strong>Japanese macaques<\/strong> that often find themselves in the Yokoyu River area and immerse themselves in the natural onsen found in this hot spring area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not only the monkeys can enjoy the warm thermal waters of this area: the nearby towns of Yudanaka Onsen and <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/en\/shibu-onsen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Shibu Onsen<\/strong><\/a><\/span> allow you to stay in ryokans and immerse yourself in the warm thermal waters of Nagano prefecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Scimmia-a-Jigokudani.png\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/600;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Scimmia-a-Jigokudani.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visit Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Jigokudani Yankoen, better known as Snow Monkey Park,<\/strong> is a natural park created in 1964 to manage the growing conflicts between the monkeys and the locals, as the totally free monkeys approached population centers too often. With the creation of this area and the artificial bath with thermal water, the monkeys prefer to stay here, in a safe environment without coming into conflict with the local population.<br>\nTo <strong>get to the park entrance,<\/strong> you need to take a path of about one and a half kilometers in the middle of the forest, a classic mountain path, where if you are lucky you can already meet some monkeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>***From 2026 a daily cap to number of visitors has been introduced; therefore, I strongly recommend that you to <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.jigokudani-yaenkoen.co.jp\/webticket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">buy the ticket online in advance<\/a><\/span> so as not to risk arriving and finding access limited.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you see a small house and the <strong>Jigokudani geyser<\/strong> (which blows constantly without ever stopping!) you will finally arrive at the park entrance, the entrance costs <span style=\"color: #00aae7;\"><strong>880 JPY<\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;and there are also coin lockers for luggage storage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this area, it is not possible to eat or bring any food inside, because of course, the monkeys could attack you to get food!<br>\nPast the small entrance, you will immediately find yourself <strong>surrounded by a lot of cute monkeys<\/strong>: sleepy old ones, curious puppies, protective mothers, big, slightly threatening young ones&#8230; bring loaded cameras and indulge yourself!<br>\nBut be careful to <strong>not touch the animals: <\/strong>they become aggressive if you get too close &#8230; maybe some curious puppy will come up to you and get on your arm resting on the fence, or stick to your skirt or try to steal your bag resting on the bench (real things happened to me), but let the monkeys &#8220;decide&#8221;, not you to impose your presence on them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Jigokudani-in-winter.png\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/600;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Jigokudani-in-winter.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best time to see the monkeys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have been lucky enough to <strong>visit the Snow Monkey Park twice: in the summer of 2014 and in the winter of 2022<\/strong>. On both occasions, I found many monkeys, although I must say that soaking in hot water, I found many more in summer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Jigokudani park in winter<\/strong> is certainly very impressive, with the white blanket of snow that covers the forest and the vicinity of the onsen. At the end of February, there is still a lot of snow, and many monkeys chase each other on the snow or are dozing off enjoying the thermal heat, extremely photogenic even for photography enthusiasts.<br>\nInstead, <strong>visiting the Snow Monkey Park in the summer<\/strong> will give you the thrill of seeing many puppies, still very intrigued by the presence of humans, and who could get even closer to you and your bags&#8230; I also found the park less crowded in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, I was told that in spring it is rare to find monkeys because it is the mating season and therefore the animals stay higher up in the mountains and in the forest. Even in autumn, it is rarer to see many of them because they are busy getting food supplies before the snow arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Curious-baby-monkey.png\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/600;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Curious-baby-monkey.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to Jigokudani<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you arrive at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/en\/visit-nagano-and-zenkoji-temple\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\">Nagano Station<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\">,<\/span> you have two options: take the highway bus to the car park near the entrance to the walking trail, or take the local train to Yudanaka and then a local bus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>direct bus<\/strong> costs <strong><span style=\"color: #00aae7;\">2,000 JPY<\/span> one way<\/strong> and is the best option if you&#8217;re visiting Snow Monkey Park on a day trip or aren&#8217;t carrying any luggage. It departs directly from the station&#8217;s east exit (the stop is clearly signposted), and seats are reserved. I therefore recommend purchasing the bus + admission package directly from the <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.jigokudani-yaenkoen.co.jp\/webticket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">park&#8217;s website<\/a><\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternatively, you can take the train on the Dentetsu Line (note that it departs from its own station, right next to the JR station) to the <strong>terminus at Yudanaka<\/strong>. The route follows a small railway line that winds its way up into the mountains\u2026 a little, slow, sleepy train that stands in stark contrast to the speedy Shinkansen. The Nagano\u2013Yudanaka journey costs <strong><span style=\"color: #00aae7;\">1,400<\/span><span style=\"color: #00aae7;\"> JPY<\/span> <\/strong>(with a \u00a5100 surcharge for the express train).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Frequent buses depart from Yudanaka Station and take you to the car park near Jigokudani Park for <span style=\"color: #00aae7;\"><strong>300 JPY<\/strong>.<\/span> However, if you&#8217;re staying in the area overnight, check whether your accommodation offers a shuttle service to and from the park, which is often free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the car park, you&#8217;ll then <strong>walk 1.6 km through the Jigokudani forest<\/strong>. It&#8217;s a pleasant, mostly flat walk suitable for everyone, cool in summer and covered in snow in winter. Regular hiking shoes are sufficient, but you can also rent snow boots for <span style=\"color: #00aae7;\"><strong>600 JPY<\/strong><\/span> at the information point at the trail entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Jigokudani-Park-entrance.png\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/600;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Jigokudani-Park-entrance.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stay in Yudanaka Onsen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yudanaka is an onsen town<\/strong>, and you will immediately notice it, near the station, there is the opportunity to try its warm waters, thanks to the free foot tubs and the numerous onsen in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inhabitants are very keen to make known the beauties of their country, and upon arrival at the station they will immediately give you a map indicating the main points of interest. Unfortunately, we had tight times and the following morning we had to leave immediately for <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/en\/matsumoto-castle-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Matsumoto<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, but in the evening it was really pleasant to walk through the deserted alleys, among the Japanese-style wooden houses!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2024 I spent the night in an adorable <strong>minshuku<\/strong> (basically the smallest, simple and family-run version of the <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/en\/guide-to-japanese-ryokan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Japanese ryokan<\/a><\/strong><\/span>), the <span style=\"color: #ff9900;\"><a style=\"color: #ff9900;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/searchresults.it.html?aid=1625166;sid=0004a69d547b2e83d867c993c056ece3;checkin=2022-03-25;checkout=2022-03-26;city=900048711;group_adults=2;group_children=0;highlighted_hotels=282737;hlrd=with_av;keep_landing=1;no_rooms=1;redirected=1;source=hotel;srpvid=679105f0222d02f1&amp;room1=A,A,;#hotelTmpl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Shimaya<\/strong><\/a>,<\/span> where we were wonderfully welcomed by Mr. Yumoto and his wife.<br>\nI highly recommend this place, both for the location (near the station and a convenience store), and for the typical Japanese room with tatami mats, futon, tea table (with tea and sweet set), comfortable yukata, and veranda. But also, and above all, for the kindness and courtesy of the owners: Mr. Yumoto will explain everything you want to know about the monkey park and Yudanaka, and also about other places in the area that you will visit. The wife, on the other hand, although she speaks less English, will be happy to give you suggestions on where to eat, and she will tell you about particularities and curiosities.<br>\nYou can choose whether to relax in the indoor bathrooms or to have the <strong>private outdoor onsen reserved for you<\/strong>, a few meters from the ryokan, which will be all yours for about an hour. I recommend it, it&#8217;s small, but it overlooks a natural terrace and will give you a great sense of freedom and relaxation!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Shimaya-Minshuku.png\" alt=\"\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/600;\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Shimaya-Minshuku.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stay at Shibu Onsen<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between Yudanaka Onsen and Jigokudani Park there is also the spa town of Shibu Onsen, with a history of 1400 years, where there are 9 public onsen with different thermal properties. Those staying at Shibu Onsen will be given a key that allows free access to the 9 onsen, while day tourists can only access one, the largest, by paying the <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong>400 yen<\/strong><\/span> ticket.
