{"id":4505,"date":"2024-04-30T08:30:51","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T06:30:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/?p=4505"},"modified":"2025-03-20T07:33:20","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T06:33:20","slug":"kumamoto-what-to-visit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/en\/kumamoto-what-to-visit\/","title":{"rendered":"Kumamoto what to visit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kumamoto was not a very famous city before April 2016, when it became sadly famous for the <strong>strong earthquake<\/strong> that caused many victims, damage and the disastrous ruin of <strong>Kumamoto Castle<\/strong>, one of the most beautiful and largest in Japan. This terrible misfortune, however, was in a sense a positive note for Kumamoto, who became known to the whole world thanks to his cute mascot <strong>Kumamon<\/strong>, the tender black bear with red cheeks.<\/p>\n<p><em>Kuma <\/em>in Japanese means <em>Bear<\/em>, but the funny thing is that Kyushu, the island where Kumamoto is located, is the only island of &#8220;continental&#8221; Japan where <strong>no bears live<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>Kumamoto is a very nice city to visit, rich in <strong>historical places<\/strong> (belongs to <strong>Miyamoto Musashi<\/strong>, the famous ronin, or the revolt of <strong>Saigo Takamori<\/strong>) and <strong>natural spot\u00a0<\/strong>(like the numerous spa resorts) and the caldera of <strong>Mount Aso<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Kumamoto is a convenient city, cheaper than other Japanese cities, with <strong>great food<\/strong> and a very widespread and efficient network of buses and <strong>trams<\/strong>. Ah yes, the trams. It is not so common to find them still here in Japan, in Tokyo there is only one for example!<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"45\" data-end=\"559\">Kyushu is <strong data-start=\"55\" data-end=\"87\">vastly different from Honshu<\/strong>, the main island where Tokyo, Kyoto, and most major tourist cities are located. It\u2019s <strong data-start=\"173\" data-end=\"200\">more rural, less hectic<\/strong>, and public transportation doesn\u2019t reach every area. After the <strong data-start=\"264\" data-end=\"283\">2016 earthquake<\/strong>, many roads and bridges were rebuilt, though some <strong data-start=\"334\" data-end=\"350\">remote areas<\/strong> remain less accessible compared to larger cities. After the heartquake, the major attraction, the <strong>Castle of Kumamoto<\/strong>, is not open to the public but in the city you can find many other points of interest. The best way to <strong>get around is use the buses<\/strong>: go up from the upper door, pick up the ticket with the stop number and when you get off you pay the corresponding amount visible on the screen next to the driver.<\/p>\n<h2>Kumamoto Castle<\/h2>\n<p>Kumamoto Castle was considered one of the <strong>largest and most beautiful castles in Japan<\/strong>. Built in 1607 by <strong>Kato Kyomasa<\/strong>, it was considered impregnable, thanks to its careful construction and its particular walls.<\/p>\n<p>In this huge castle, <strong>Miyamoto Musashi<\/strong>, the famous ronin who spent his old age in these areas, also found hospitality.<\/p>\n<p>The castle was <strong>heavily damaged by the earthquake of 2016<\/strong> (it was not in any case the original structure) and the whole area inside the walls <strong>isn&#8217;t accessible<\/strong>. It is says that the reconstruction will take about twenty years.<br \/>\nHowever, it is possible to follow the walk that surrounds the walls, from where some of the internal towers are visible, but above all we can see a <strong>part of the destruction that the earthquake caused<\/strong>. The explanatory panels also show photographs of the &#8220;before&#8221; and see with their own eyes this disaster really makes the heart clench.<\/p>\n<p>To get an <strong>overall view of the castle area<\/strong>, I recommend going up to the top floor of the Municipal Office, from whose observatory you can see the <strong>inner park of the castle and the work in progress<\/strong>. There is also an explanatory display on the castle&#8217;s reconstruction process.<\/p>\n<p>Near the Castle of Kumamoto, in addition to some temples, there is also <strong>Sakura no Baba Josaien<\/strong>, a commercial area that recalls the <strong>atmosphere of a small town of the Edo period<\/strong>. It is worth visiting the <strong>WakuWaku Za Museum<\/strong> which, besides explaining with funny games and interactivity history of the Castle and the life of Japan in the Edo period, shows a video with images of the Castle before the earthquake and immediately after the disaster, showing the interiors and the damages suffered.<br \/>\n<em>Price: <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong>800yen<\/strong><\/span> adults &#8211; <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong>300yen<\/strong> <\/span>elementary and middle school students<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Hours: 09:00 &#8211; 17:00 every day<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Kumamoto-Castle-1.jpg\" width=\"999\" height=\"669\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 999px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 999\/669;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Kumamoto-Castle-1.jpg\" width=\"999\" height=\"669\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h2>Suizenji Garden<\/h2>\n<p>This beautiful garden is listed among the <strong>most beautiful gardens in Japan<\/strong> and represents the <strong>53 stations of the Tokaido<\/strong>, the famous road that during the Edo period connected the Capital Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto, that all the feudal lords had to travel at least twice in a year. It was built in 1636 by the third of the Hosokawa as a tea house and its garden. To be more precise than a Samurai<strong> it would be better to call him a Ronin<\/strong>, the so-called wave warriors, the warriors without a Lord, who traveled the country in search of engagements as mercenaries, fame, or to complete their training course, training, duels and Zen. A <strong>sword-man, but also a man of great culture<\/strong>: sculptor, painter, poet, designer of Japanese gardens and great expert in fortifications, which thanks to its unbeaten reached an advanced age (61 years) very rare thing among the Samurai. He arrived in Kumamoto in the last years of his life, <strong>guest of Tadatoshi Hosokawa inside the castle<\/strong>.<br \/>\nHere in Kumamoto, precisely at Reigando Cave immersed in the mountains around the city, that Musashi wrote his most famous work &#8220;<strong>The Book of Five Rings<\/strong>&#8221; a study of military and psychological strategy of great relevance even today for his applicability in daily life and work; in Japan it&#8217;s <strong>still studied in many university courses<\/strong>, and not only historically, but also and above all managerial, psychological and coaching, as well as obviously being a kind of sacred book for all martial arts practitioners, and in particular those of Japanese sword. From there, a small road climbs uphill through the rice fields, up to the small silent village developed near the <strong>Unganzenji temple<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAfter paying the symbolic entrance fee of <span style=\"color: #99ccff;\"><strong>100 yen<\/strong><\/span>, you can see a small exhibition of some objects related to Musashi and some old translated editions of the Book of Five Rings.<br \/>\nThe path then continues in the little wood flanked by the <strong>five hundred stone Buddha statues<\/strong>, up to the <strong>Reigando Cave<\/strong>, a place that has always been considered sacred due to the strange and mysterious shapes of its rocks, which have always made it a place for ascetic training.<br \/>\nHere in this cave, <strong>Musashi lived his last months of life<\/strong>, meditating in solitude and writing what had to be simple instructions for his students.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Reigando-Cave.jpg\" width=\"999\" height=\"669\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 999px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 999\/669;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Reigando-Cave.jpg\" width=\"999\" height=\"669\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h3>Musashizuka Park<\/h3>\n<p>About fifteen minutes by train from the Suizenji Garden, leaving the tourist center of Kumamoto, there is the Musashizuka Park, where the<strong> statue of Musashi and his tomb<\/strong> are located.<br \/>\nThe Musashizuka Park is a quiet park, almost a neighborhood garden, with pretty paths, many benches and practically<strong> no tourists<\/strong>. It is a discreet and silent place, where to pay homage to the great intellectual swordsman without haste and without distractions, <strong>accompanied only by his own thoughts<\/strong> and by the sound of the stream running through the park.<\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Musashi-Grave.jpg\" width=\"999\" height=\"669\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 999px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 999\/669;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Musashi-Grave.jpg\" width=\"999\" height=\"669\" \/><\/noscript><\/h2>\n<h2>Accomodation in Kumamoto<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"33\" data-end=\"489\">ven if you plan to take day trips to the surrounding areas, <strong data-start=\"94\" data-end=\"111\">Kumamoto City<\/strong> is an excellent base for your stay, as it is well-connected by both <strong data-start=\"180\" data-end=\"194\">Shinkansen<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"199\" data-end=\"219\">Kumamoto Airport<\/strong>. If you&#8217;re traveling by car, you\u2019ll find plenty of parking spaces at very affordable prices. Since we were using public transportation, we looked for a location close to the <strong data-start=\"394\" data-end=\"486\">train station, bus stops, Kumamoto Castle, and the main street for dining in the evening<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"491\" data-end=\"1468\">On my first trip to Kumamoto, I found <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.klook.com\/activity\/89088-1-hour-join-kumamoto-samurai-experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><strong data-start=\"529\" data-end=\"549\">Hotel Hokke Club<\/strong><\/a><\/span> to be a great choice, with an airport shuttle stopping just <strong data-start=\"610\" data-end=\"638\">50 meters from the hotel<\/strong>. It\u2019s a <strong data-start=\"647\" data-end=\"671\">business hotel chain<\/strong> offering spacious rooms, plenty of amenities, and even a <strong data-start=\"729\" data-end=\"744\">public bath<\/strong> where you can relax after a long day of sightseeing.<br data-start=\"797\" data-end=\"800\" \/><br \/>\nThe <strong data-start=\"804\" data-end=\"825\">economy twin room<\/strong> (keep in mind that a &#8220;double bed&#8221; in Japan is typically a <strong data-start=\"884\" data-end=\"899\">semi-double<\/strong>, which is smaller than a standard Western double bed) was very spacious, equipped with a <strong data-start=\"989\" data-end=\"1026\">mini fridge, slippers, and yukata<\/strong>.
