To be honest, I had never even dreamed of beginning a year like that.<\/em><br data-start=\"529\" data-end=\"532\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Yet, it really happened.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"560\" data-end=\"1027\">It was a late October afternoon when, while looking back at photos from our trip to Palawan the year before, we decided to check flights for New Year\u2019s week. We found a super cheap one to Cebu, booked it immediately, and I started planning possible stops and things to see. That\u2019s when the <strong>unique nature of Bohol and the beaches of Panglao<\/strong>\u2014just a few hours away by ferry\u2014caught my attention. I knew instantly that this was the place where we\u2019d welcome the new year.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1029\" data-end=\"1429\"><strong>Bohol and Panglao are two Philippine islands connected by road bridges, and they\u2019re usually visited together on a 3\u20134 day<\/strong> trip that combines <strong>Bohol\u2019s lush landscapes with Panglao\u2019s idyllic beaches<\/strong>. Life here is very much local, but there are three main reasons people come: the Chocolate Hills, the tarsiers, and the Loboc River.<br \/>\nYou can explore Bohol\u2019s main attractions by <strong>renting a scooter<\/strong>, joining one of the many tours offered everywhere on both Bohol and Panglao, or booking through your accommodation. The Chocolate Hills are cone-shaped hills that turn brown during the dry season, resembling chocolates. Even when they\u2019re green, the view from the observation deck is breathtaking: a sea of perfectly shaped hills stretching as far as the eye can see.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2347\" data-end=\"2539\"><strong>The origin of the Chocolate Hills isn\u2019t certain,<\/strong> but they\u2019re thought to be ancient coral deposits revealed by erosion. A true natural wonder\u2014just like <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/en\/underground-river-palawan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Palawan\u2019s incredible underground river<\/strong><\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2541\" data-end=\"2747\">The viewpoint has an entrance fee of <span style=\"color: #00aae7;\"><strong>150 pesos<\/strong><\/span>, and from the parking area there are <strong>about 200 steps<\/strong> up to the observation platform. The view will leave you breathless (and not just because of the climb!).<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2749\" data-end=\"2776\">The Tarsier of Bohol<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2777\" data-end=\"3205\"><strong>The tarsier is a tiny primate<\/strong>, only up to 160 mm long and weighing about 160 grams. It can leap up to 5 meters and has huge eyes fixed in its small head, which can rotate 180\u00b0 left and right. These little \u201cYodas\u201d <strong>are delicate creatures and sadly endangered<\/strong>, but Bohol is one of the few places where you can still find them.<strong> Thanks to government protection and sanctuaries, you can observe them in their natural forest habitat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3207\" data-end=\"3585\">Not all sanctuaries are respectful\u2014some are more \u201ctourist friendly\u201d than \u201ctarsier friendly.\u201d Based on local advice and research, we chose the <strong data-start=\"3349\" data-end=\"3381\">Tarsier Sanctuary in Corella<\/strong>, which truly cares for the animals. Visits are in small groups (about 8 people) with a guide, after watching an educational video. <strong>Rules are strict: no talking, no flash, no selfie sticks, no touching!<\/strong><br \/>\nTarsiers are extremely sensitive\u2014<strong>if stressed, frightened, or touched, they can even commit suicide<\/strong> by hitting their heads or holding their breath. Since they\u2019re nocturnal, they usually nap during the day, making it rare to see them with their big eyes wide open.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3853\" data-end=\"4038\">There is a contribution fee for the conservation of <span style=\"color: #00aae7;\"><strong>150 pesos<\/strong><\/span>. For thrill seekers, there\u2019s also a <strong>zipline offering a bird\u2019s-eye view of the river and forest<\/strong>. During the day, <strong>river cruises with lunch<\/strong> are offered, but we chose to<strong> stay in an ecolodge<\/strong> on its banks for a deeper experience. From <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/ph\/water-to-forest-ecolodge.en.html?aid=1208077&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Water to Forest Ecolodge<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, we took a <strong>kayak trip at sunset, paddling into the dark until we reached areas where fireflies gathered<\/strong>. Drifting under the jungle sounds was magical enough, but when the trees lit up with glowing fireflies, it felt like staring at a natural Christmas tree.<br \/>\nUnfortunately, the moment was sometimes interrupted by the noise of tourist boats on night cruises. These disturb the fireflies, and over time could make them disappear\u2014just like in many of our countryside areas back home.<strong> Being responsible tourists means leaving as little trace as possible. Just like in Oslob, they were being fed to alter their migratory routes for tourists\u2019 sake, often injuring themselves against the many boats. This small island, connected by two bridges, is famous for powdery white sand and turquoise waters. It has grown a lot in recent years, popular especially with Asian tourists (mainly Koreans and Japanese).<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5919\" data-end=\"5941\">Panglao Beaches<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5942\" data-end=\"6241\">The heart of Panglao\u2019s day and nightlife is <strong data-start=\"5986\" data-end=\"6001\">Alona Beach<\/strong>, where we joined the New Year\u2019s Eve countdown with music, cocktails, and fireworks over the sea. Alona is paradise:<strong> blindingly white sand and crystal-clear shallow water<\/strong>, perfect for strolling or sunbathing. Sunsets here are spectacular. The <strong>beachfront<\/strong> is lined with restaurants and bars, plus a convenience store and ATM. Most accommodations, shops, and exchanges are here too\u2014prices are higher, but even over New Year\u2019s, it never felt overcrowded. The beach is long, so you can always find a quieter spot. A few palm trees provide shade (coveted spots!), and while we did find some seaweed at the shoreline, once past that the water was simply incredible.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6666\" data-end=\"7049\">Other stunning beaches are <strong data-start=\"6693\" data-end=\"6711\">Dumaluan Beach<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"6716\" data-end=\"6731\">White Beach<\/strong>\u2014quieter than Alona but just as breathtaking. We stayed at <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/ph\/d-amp-b-bluestar-beach-resort.en.html?aid=1208077&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><strong>D&amp;B Bluestar Beach Resort<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, with direct access to White Beach. Here we found powder sand, crystal waters, giant starfish, and only a few food stalls and stray dogs. However, <strong>since September 2024 Virgin Island has been closed due to overtourism damage\u2014hopefully it will recover.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"7366\" data-end=\"7755\">To be honest, the way Balicasag tours are run, it\u2019s no wonder Virgin Island had to be shut down. Boats all converge at the same time, guides push tourists to chase turtles, and many step on corals with reef shoes when tired of swimming. The result? The beach where the bangkas dock is gorgeous, with a small restaurant and a few lodges\u2014<strong>spending a night must be unforgettable if you have time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8307\" data-end=\"8699\"><strong>We first booked through Alona Beach vendors<\/strong> (after a disappointing Balicasag trip arranged by our hotel), but it turned into an even worse experience. Our boat never arrived, we waited 1.5 hours, missed the dolphins, and had to call the police to get our deposit refunded! Sadly, <strong>scams like this are common among Alona vendors<\/strong>, who take advantage of tourists not chasing after \u20ac10 deposits.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"8701\" data-end=\"8994\">Luckily, <strong>local fishermen<\/strong> we met at White Beach\u2014angry at how these scammers damage the island\u2019s reputation\u2014helped us. The fare is <span style=\"color: #00aae7;\"><strong>870 pesos<\/strong><\/span>. You can choose indoor (with aircon) or outdoor seats\u2014I recommend outdoors, as you\u2019re shaded but spared the freezing AC.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9538\" data-end=\"9631\">Panglao also has a small <strong>airport<\/strong>, but flights are less frequent and usually not very cheap.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9633\" data-end=\"9769\">On the islands, you can <strong>rent a scooter or use<\/strong> <strong data-start=\"9679\" data-end=\"9687\">Grab<\/strong>, which is super convenient for getting around, especially to and from the port.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"9633\" data-end=\"9769\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6188 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Heymondo-EN-800x166.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"166\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Heymondo-EN-800x166.png 800w, https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Heymondo-EN-768x159.png 768w, https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Heymondo-EN.png 1201w\" data-sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/166;\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-6188\" src=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Heymondo-EN-800x166.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"166\" srcset=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Heymondo-EN-800x166.png 800w, https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Heymondo-EN-768x159.png 768w, https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Heymondo-EN.png 1201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"9633\" data-end=\"9769\">Where to stay<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"67\" data-end=\"1128\">The general recommendation is to <strong>stay in Panglao and visit Bohol as a day trip<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"146\" data-end=\"149\" \/><br \/>\nPersonally, however, I really loved spending the night at the <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/ph\/water-to-forest-ecolodge.en.html?aid=1208077&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Water to Forest Ecolodge<\/strong><\/a><\/span>\u00a0located <strong>on the banks of the Loboc River<\/strong>. At the end of a road in a tiny, super-local village, the lodge is made up of stilt houses practically without walls, closed only by curtains. There\u2019s no air conditioning, but there are fans that keep working even during the nightly power cuts, while you fall asleep surrounded by the sounds of nature (safely tucked under a mosquito net around the bed). Bathrooms are shared, and it\u2019s possible to arrange SUP and kayak outings, along with other excursions. A true immersion in nature, which I personally loved even more than <span style=\"color: #f99b1c;\"><a style=\"color: #f99b1c;\" href=\"https:\/\/warmcheaptrips.com\/en\/where-to-stay-el-nido-unique-experience\/#Isla_Experience_-_The_Unique_Experience_in_Beachfront_Bungalow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"830\">The Isla Experience<\/strong><\/a><\/span> in El Nido. While similar in concept, that one felt a bit more \u201ctouristy\u201d by comparison. Meals are not included, but there\u2019s a caf\u00e9 on site where you can order breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Prices are a bit higher, but the food is really tasty and the portions generous. Just over <span style=\"color: #00aae7;\"><strong>\u20ac25<\/strong><\/span> per night.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1130\" data-end=\"2050\"><strong>For Panglao, we preferred to avoid staying in the busy Alona Beach area,<\/strong> but we still wanted to be within walking distance of the shore. Luckily, we found availability at the <strong data-start=\"1309\" data-end=\"1338\">D&amp;B Bluestar Beach Resort<\/strong> which, despite the name, is a regular hotel with fairly spacious rooms, a shower area separate from the rest of the bathroom, and an outdoor terrace or porch \u2014 a bit like a seaside apartment, just without a kitchen!<br data-start=\"1554\" data-end=\"1557\" \/><br \/>\nRight on the beach, it also has a small garden with hammocks and lounge chairs under the trees for those who prefer shade. Breakfast is included, and they can prepare simple meals for lunch and dinner on request, but honestly, the food was quite disappointing. It\u2019s possible to rent scooters and arrange excursions directly from the hotel.
